The National Special Needs & Disabilities Committee’s Spring Mini-Conference is an in-person training opportunity on planning for neurodiversity in Scouting. It is intended for adult leaders, camp leaders, Scouting professionals, parents, caregivers, and any others interested.
The conference will focus on steps we can take ahead of time to help ensure that the usual methods of Scouting (camping or advancement, for example) provide a positive experience for Scouts with special needs or disabilities. Here are examples of session topics planned for the conference (subject to change):
- Preparing a neurodiverse Scout for summer camp
- Preparing the summer camp for neurodiverse Scouts
- Review high adventure opportunities for neurodiverse Scouts
- Plan a young Scout’s experience with camping and advancement
- Apply flexibility to advancement requirements while staying within the rules
- First-hand: neurodivergent Scouting experiences
- First-hand: recognizing Scouters who enable Scouts with special needs
The Conference will be hosted by Northern Star Council at its Leadership Center, aka Base Camp, Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Base Camp is a short metro train ride from the MSP airport, the Mall of America, and numerous hotels. Fort Snelling is at the meeting of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, with parks lining the rivers.
